Career Services

Hillsdale College Career Services is guided by two principles drawn from our governing documents. Namely, that each student's career exploration process must be an exercise of your self-government and each student's search is in the context of their liberal arts education.

The first guiding principle is derived from the Honor Code (http://www.hillsdale.edu/academics/code):

A Hillsdale College student is honorable in conduct, honest in word and deed, dutiful in study and service and respectful of the rights of others. Through education the student rises to self-government.

Thus, the College’s approach to education, and to life “post-Hillsdale,” are each founded on the principle of self-government. Self-government is a challenge with the promise of a rich reward: liberty of the soul. A soul enjoys liberty when it is ordered—when its passions are ruled by reason and its habit is virtue. Hillsdale College exists for the improvement and ultimate happiness of its students. This great and enduring happiness is its highest purpose and highest value.

Secondly, Hillsdale College students must remember that “getting a job” is not the right reason to pursue education. Preparation for employment is a happy result of learning, but it is not the end in and of itself. The Career Services mission statement clarifies the proper relationship:

By virtue of a liberal arts education, Hillsdale College prepares students to lead others and to excel in every calling. The Career Services Office encourages and assists students in fulfilling their vocations, so that, leavened by their education, the students better serve their neighbors, their nation, and God.

Career development is supplementary to the endeavor of education. But because of this ordering, Hillsdale College graduates are equipped to compete in the workplace, not only because of their knowledge and intellect, but also because of the content of their character.
