John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center

Hillsdale College's John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center is located five miles from campus. The 103-acre facility features four American trap fields, a five-stand sporting clays field, a small arms range, a skeet field for both American and International skeet, and a lodge and education center. Future plans include the construction of a combination 100-meter rifle and 50-meter pistol range, one International/Olympic bunker trap field, an indoor air gun and archery range, and an outdoor archery range that will meet specification for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competitions and Olympic shooting.

Through the Halter Shooting Sports Education Center, Hillsdale College aims to develop a competitive collegiate shotgun team, to introduce new shooters to the sport, and to promote interest in the shooting sports in general. The scholastic component of Hillsdale's program makes it unique among colleges and universities. Educational seminars are presented on campus in conjunction with shooting events held at the range. Hillsdale faculty and guest lecturers give talks on American history, free-market economics, and the Constitution, with particular emphasis on the Second Amendment. The objective is to show students and other citizens the vital connection between the founding principles of the nation and their constitutional rights as free people.

Shootings Sports Club & Intercollegiate Team

The Hillsdale College Shooting Sports Club was established in the fall of 2009. The club welcomes members of all skill levels and focuses on developing shooting skills for competition. Members meet two to three times a week at the range to work with certified instructors and practice for participation in various shooting events.

The intercollegiate team competes in multiple Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) events and the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Intercollegiate Clay Target Championships. Hillsdale's shotgun team won the Division III national title at the 2012 ACUI championships held in San Antonio, Texas. In 2013, they competed in ACUI Division II events, earning seventh place.
